History: all of the Ionic part of the coast, including this town, constantly brings to mind historic echoes of Ancient Greece. Indeed tradition has it that the first Greek colony in Sicily was established at Naxos now called Giardini-Naxos near Taormina, in 734 BC by the inhabitants of the city of Calcis on the island of Eubea.
